Five Star Review by Tom Donlon, West Virginia writer...

5.0 out of 5 stars Ezra and Other Stories December 8, 2012

Accolades again to Barbara Whittington for her ability to create stories from the small-town ordinary lives of people. Between these Ezra stories and Vada Faith, she has put Putnam County, WV on the global map.

Again, as in Vada Faith, her attention to detail pervades (and adds humor) and can be seen in some of the small-town anchors: McDonald's Big Macs, K-Mart, and the jobs people get at them after high school. The reader also observes much of the brokenness people must live with (marriages ended, parents leaving kids behind, marriages brought about by odd circumstances--like marrying to cover a potential pregnancy). I never thought a funeral parlor man would be found sexy.

Three powerful stories are the opening one ("Mabel") with the historical investigation of a life through belongings, "Delphine and Rainelle," and "Ezra." The author may have positioned them in that order for emphasis. All of the stories are good. They all take the plain people and show the complexity, the value of each. Rainelle doesn't know how to--or refuses to--come in from the rain.

In all of these stories, the reader is left wanting to bless the unfortunate, the ill, the person who has not realized goals in life. After reading "Ezra," the reader is left to ponder his or her own destiny and to wonder about those last moments of life when the heart of a loved one gives out. The reader longs to be reunited with loved ones and to hope for heaven, despite the occasional evangelist who may have us in his pocket.

  1. Congrats on a wonderful and very deserved awesome book review! I'm on the third story and I have enjoyed reading every word. I feel like I know these characters and can see bits and pieces of people I know or have met in my life. (and I'm from Chicago!) I'll finish the book this weekend and give a review of my own...not that it carries as much weight as this one does! I hope others take advantage of the free offer to get this book.

  2. Your review means so much to me, Yaya. Each review believe it or not helps sell books. So does giving books away free. Word of mouth still works.
I'm thrilled you like the book and recognize some of the human characteristics that I believe we all have, regardless of our class or race etc.
    Blessings!
Plus, Tom was great to do this for me. He's a poet and a good one!

Ah, Spring and all her glory.

I'm enjoying the spring weather that has finally arrived in Ohio bringing blooming pear trees, red buds and tulip trees. How about you? Do you love spring as much as I do? I spent a day on the patio, putting out the table, chairs, umbrella. I painted a white wicker plant table and have decided it's too good for the patio. I plan to use it in the bathroom instead. Just when I thought winter would last forever, spring arrived with temperatures in the 70's. I noted buds covering my rose bush and a robin building a nest in the crevice of my chimney. I wanted to let them stay but they managed to leave so much debris at my front door that I had no choice but to shoo them away. Hopefully they've moved on to one of the many trees and bushes in my community, a more cozy place for raising babies. When I was a kid growing up in Putnam County, WV, I was outside at the first glimpse of the sun coming through my bedroom window. I ran through our yard, down through the orcha

The Dreaded School Pictures

This year when my children brought home their school pictures, I cringed.  These kids can leave home looking cherubic, but the minute they pose for that school photographer they are transposed into unrecognizable beings.  My middle daughter brought home pictures bearing her name and room number that couldn't have been my offspring. Nor a distant relative. I had worked for hours on this child. Her hair was parted in the middle and drawn into a cute little ponytail over each ear. Even though she is at an awkward age, she looked adorable when she went out that door. Her missing front teeth only added to her charm.  The kid in the picture has her mouth open wide displaying ugly dark gaps. Her one visible ponytail is lopsided, her part is uneven, and her bangs look like they were cut with pinking shears. I know this isn't my child because I always give my children a good haircut before they have their pictures taken. The only thing vaguely familiar is the sweater t
