What is a poem, actually?

I'm unsure exactly what a poem is. I've never had formal training in poetry writing but with me the words come out and seem to know the order in which they wish to appear.

I've been writing with notebook and pen and discovering a creativity that has been lacking when I compose on the computer. It's been fun to experience some of the same feelings I had when I first started to write. Pure bliss. Plus, I'm in the process of renewing my commitment to my work.

It's a good solid honest feeling.

It feels as though I've been on a sabbatical without leaving home.

The four youngest grand kids I have here this week keep reminding my grand mothering duties come first. We are now on our tenth good night hug. But they're adjusting to the fact that mom is going on a week's vacation without them. A first and a real adjustment.
So far they've handled it well.

Thanks for continuing to read my posts and commenting.
Blogging really is a give and take relationship.

Blessings to you and  yours.
Tonight I am blessed with not only a good birthday and some writing accomplished but so many little ones in the house who think I'm great. Nothing beats that feeling.

God bless all of you, my dear friends!

Comments on poetry are welcome as it seems my words want to take that form lately.

  1. Nothing like the feeling of creating with pen and paper.

    Enjoy the grands.

  2. Your poetry is beautiful, Barb. I find writing with pen and paper changes the feel and tone of my words as well. It's wonderful that you've found this way to recharge.

  3. I'm with you when it comes to writing poetry. I have never had any formal training and the way it comes out is the only way I know. I have always wrote with a pen and paper. I make sure it is the way I want it before I ever think about putting it on the computer. That's the best way, I found that out a long time ago. Glad I'm not alone.. I love your poetry, it is beautiful and so creatitive.. Blessings, Susie

  4. I feel taking the time with pen and paper gives my brain the time to really feel and then write. We're always rushing around in life and the computer keyboard is just another way of speeding through it! I enjoy your poetry and your blog. I agree with you about the Grandkiddos..with my own kids it was always a toss up as to whether I was doing things right..with the Grands, you can't really mess up..they seem to overlook any mistakes!

  5. A sabbatical is a good thing even if you were not officially awarded one.

I don't really feel like I'm writing unless it is with a pen and paper. I love your poems. I seldom take the time to read poetry, but I read yours and loved them.

  6. You cannot know how my day has been lifted.
It's been a rough one with the kiddies missing their mom who has never left them for more than a few hrs.
Plus the busyness of it all has me dragging.
I'm heading to bed. Everyone tucked in and feeling a good kind of exhaustion.
Blessings to you for all your support. B

  7. There is something about pen and paper that is truly therapy. It does this for me:
    1. Helps me focus
    2. I get to practice my actual handwriting skills that I rarely do anymore.
    3. I can't internet surf which saves me mountains of time.

PS I love my grandbabies, too.

Ah, Spring and all her glory.

I'm enjoying the spring weather that has finally arrived in Ohio bringing blooming pear trees, red buds and tulip trees. How about you? Do you love spring as much as I do? I spent a day on the patio, putting out the table, chairs, umbrella. I painted a white wicker plant table and have decided it's too good for the patio. I plan to use it in the bathroom instead. Just when I thought winter would last forever, spring arrived with temperatures in the 70's. I noted buds covering my rose bush and a robin building a nest in the crevice of my chimney. I wanted to let them stay but they managed to leave so much debris at my front door that I had no choice but to shoo them away. Hopefully they've moved on to one of the many trees and bushes in my community, a more cozy place for raising babies. When I was a kid growing up in Putnam County, WV, I was outside at the first glimpse of the sun coming through my bedroom window. I ran through our yard, down through the orcha

The Dreaded School Pictures

This year when my children brought home their school pictures, I cringed.  These kids can leave home looking cherubic, but the minute they pose for that school photographer they are transposed into unrecognizable beings.  My middle daughter brought home pictures bearing her name and room number that couldn't have been my offspring. Nor a distant relative. I had worked for hours on this child. Her hair was parted in the middle and drawn into a cute little ponytail over each ear. Even though she is at an awkward age, she looked adorable when she went out that door. Her missing front teeth only added to her charm.  The kid in the picture has her mouth open wide displaying ugly dark gaps. Her one visible ponytail is lopsided, her part is uneven, and her bangs look like they were cut with pinking shears. I know this isn't my child because I always give my children a good haircut before they have their pictures taken. The only thing vaguely familiar is the sweater t
