Trouble Getting Back on Writing Track....

I just spent 15 minutes doing a yoga work out. I feel stronger, more centered, and on my way back to being healthy again.

Yet, I seem to be having trouble getting back on the writing track.

My whole life seems off kilter.

Staying in bed for a week or so with an illness must turn ones mind and body to jelly. That's exactly how I feel. Shaky and unsure of myself.

I KNOW. It doesn't take much to get me off track in the first place. But why is it so hard to get back on?

Do you have that problem? When you've been away from your work for whatever reason, away from your writing for awhile, do you feel you'll NEVER get back on track again.

For me, writing always starts with writing. I can't think about it, reason it out in my head. It never works. All that works is actually writing.

So this afternoon I'll be doing just that. I'll be writing.

Blessings! Stay well, stay focused, and write.

  1. Yes, sometimes I do have trouble getting back on the writing track. But then, I just force myself to sit down at the computer and get out some of my old stories or try and get inspired with a new one. Good luck with your writing.

  2. I know exactly how you feel, and for me the only remedy is to make a beginning step back on whatever path I've wandered from. Just one step. Then another. Before too long I'm striding along again. Best of luck with your recovery and your writing.

  3. Good that you are back on track. It happens to all of us. I just started to try yoga and must say I sleep so much better!

  4. I haven't tried pm yoga but need to give it a try. It helps me get started in the mornings.

Thanks for all the comments. I'm back!

  5. Yes! Yes! Yes! I don't write at all in August...and the first part of September, because of my job, but now that things are slowing down, I am struggling with fear and the blank page. Strange...
I did tackle 2 character sketches yesterday, so hopefully this week will be the week I actually put fingers to the keyboard.

So how much did you get written this afternoon?

  6. The hardest part for me is getting myself to sit down! Once I'm in front of the computer and start reading what I last wrote, it's okay. I'm going to have a "dry" two weeks now with all the traveling coming up, but two weeks from today I'll be where you are--trying to get back. I'm setting some deadlines, hope it works!

  7. I did very little writing today. I counted the blog as some of my writing. It took two days to make myself tackle that. Like Liz, I'll start by reading over what I already have written and start from that. But when I've been away for a long stretch it's as if I've never written one thing, with Fear riding high on my shoulder. Tonight I have placed my WIP on my computer so that in the morning I'll have no excuses!

  8. I feel like I spend a lot of time off track. So I write off track too. You know, I sit in the mud by the road side of the track I should be on and I write. Cause then the words are flavored with the reality of a girl who sits sometimes because she can't walk and writes sometimes because she can't speak. Those are the words that seem the most real to me. Blessings as you get back on track.

  9. Yes, I know that feeling. I can't get on track because I have the internet to distract me. I stop writing to research and next thing I know I"m playing on Facebook or updating Twitter!

  10. Sometimes I write about what I see on TV when I got nothing else to write about.

A Revolutionary New Diet...

Recently I went on a diet. Like most diets this one was scheduled around a major life event. My daughter's wedding. There would be no shopping for a mother-of-the-bride dress until the pounds came off. Typically I go on a diet on Monday and by Wednesday I've folded beneath the weight of a German chocolate cake. I've been hijacked by as little as a stale pink sugar wafer discovered in the dark recesses of the bread drawer. But this time things were going to be different. I could tell as I went to get the mail and discovered the first crocus of the season. Life was looking up. Even though an icy rain began to fall, my spirits weren't dampened. Not even when huge drops pelted me on the head and I had to dash inside. My latest plan would revolutionize dieting. If it worked for me it would work for the world. I smelled a book deal. I could see myself all made-over and liposuctioned sitting between Oprah and Dr. Oz. It was full speed ahead. Gone were those complex menus...

Building a story vs building a house

My latest book! Dear Writer:  Writing a story is somewhat similar to building a house. Or not! Remember this: when we give a piece of our story to someone to read - we expect them to see the whole. It's like building a house and offering a single piece of lumber to another builder. “Here, see the house I'm building.” SOME CAN SEE IT AND SOME CAN’T. Here's the thing: MOST CAN'T. This step is as necessary to me as breathing.  I need to give you single boards as I create them. AND I expect you to be a visionary and say, “Why yes. I see.”   I need you to see how special the piece of lumber is that I'm using and to see that eventually I'll add more pieces to make the whole.  Choose people to read your work who like the kind of stories you write.  There are as many kinds of stories as there are houses to live in. If you give a brick ranch to someone who only appreciates a cape cod then he'll have a hard time fitting hims...
